About the Team
Assets and Engineering is a division of Network Design and Integration and is responsible for enabling Department of Transport to effectively plan, deliver and maintain a safe, resilient and fit-for-purpose Victorian transport system through trusted, systematic and disciplined technical excellence.

The Road Design team is part of the Assets and Engineering division and is focused on delivering sustainable road design services that address transport growth and investment. With a high demand for our services the Road Design team supports the Department of Transport deliver on its strategic priorities.

About the Opportunity
The Lead Civil Designer (Road Design) sits within Assets and Engineering and is responsible for leading the delivery of road design services including road design advice, investigations and concept and detail designs. Applying innovative thinking and analysis to influence quality, cost effective project outcomes within the road design field.

The Lead Civil Designer (Road Design) will manage and lead the delivery of road design projects to ensure the delivery of services and advice is within agreed timeframes and budgets. The role will also contribute to enhancing capability and knowledge sharing and be responsible for provding sound advice and guidance to Department of Transport and other clients and specialists in the road design field while also  contributing to their community of practice.

Position Outcomes

  • Road Design Service Delivery – Managed and led the delivery of road design projects, providing specialist professional road design services within agreed timeframes, budgets, and to a high standard and aligning with safe system principles
  • Trusted Advisor– Exercised sound specialist knowledge with the road design field and provided trusted technical advice and solutions relating to road and traffic disciplines. Prepares technical reports at an advanced professional level. Standards in own area of responsibility have been interpreted and appropriately applied to deliver innovative, high quality road design services. Applied innovative thinking and analysis to influence quality, cost effective project outcomes within the road design field.
  • Stakeholder Engagement – Initiated, developed and maintained effective working relationships with key internal and external stakeholders and clients. Focused on understanding stakeholder issues to support the delivery of specialist professional services and advice. Applied negotiation and persuasion skills to manage relationships with peers, stakeholders, and clients.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Critical Thinking and Problem Solving  – Takes into account wider business context within business unit when considering options to resolve issues. Identifies recurring problems and prevents future recurrence by integrating solutions into work process. Delivers tangible business outcomes as a result of critically evaluating problems from multiple perspectives and delivering effective solutions.
  • Professional Knowledge  - Applies specialist knowledge to shape engineering outcomes in a specific area of engineering practice and context. Ensures compliance to all relevant laws, regulations, codes, standards and other instruments affecting engineering designs or work.
  • Project Delivery – Defines tasks to be delivered to meet agreed outcomes; Coordinates and guides others in the execution of work activities; Monitor's progress of tasks against plans and takes corrective action when required

Mandatory

  • Extensive experience in road design
  • Extensive experience in the use of Austroads guidelines and DoT supplements to road design
  • Experience in project management and delivering road design related projects
  • Proficient in the use of Bentley Systems Inroads CADD software
