Position Details

Join a DTF Legal's high-performing team and provide advice on State significant projects, litigation and public law matters. 

DTF Legal provides internal legal and advisory services to the Treasurer, the Minister for Finance, the DTF Secretary and board, and other DTF groups. We provide advice on the full spectrum of issues faced by our clients, including on Victoria's financial management framework, the delivery of State significant social and economic infrastructure, litigation and disputes, the powers of Parliament and external integrity and accountability bodies, and on a range of other public, administrative and commercial law issues.

In this role, you will:

  • Provide sophisticated, authoritative, solutions-based legal services across the full spectrum of issues faced by the Department and its associated Ministerial porfolio's. 
  • Identify and resolve all issues referred to or emerging from DTF Legal's work (including governance, policy, operational and other non-legal advice and analysis relevant to the Government, the public sector and public administration) that could affect DTF's or its portfolio Ministers' interests and positions. 
  • Develop close, effective and candid relationships and negotiate effectively with other DTF groups, other departments and agencies, and work actively to achieve changes in policy and practice. 
  • Lead and contribute to major policy and legislative projects, including managing the preparation and enactment of legislation and other significant policy proposals as required. 
  • Represent DTF to Ministers, senior public officials and other stakeholders and interested parties with minimal or no guidance. 
  • Support the General Counsel with the leadership and management of DTF Legal, including workload and resource allocation, staff management responsibilities and acting for the General Counsel as required. 
  • Undertake other tasks relevant to DTF Legal's and Corporate and Government Services Division's responsibilities, including corporate development and projects and organisational development initiatives to improve culture and performance.

Experience and qualifications:

The successful candidate will be:

  • admitted, or eligible to be admitted, to practice as a legal practitioner in Victoria (mandatory) 
  • be recognised within the legal profession for well-developed and considered judgement and impeccable professional ethics and integrity (mandatory)

Post-graduate qualifications in law, public policy, public administration or similar are desirable but not mandatory.
