About us

The Department of Treasury and Finance provides economic, financial and resource management advice to help the Victorian Government deliver its policies. We strive for excellence in financial and economic management to improve the lives of all Victorians.

The Economic Division leads the development of advice to the Government on key economic and policy priorities including economic strategy, regulatory reform, housing, social policy, government tax policy and intergovernmental financial relations to drive improvements in Victoria's productive and efficient resource allocation, competitiveness and equity across the economy.

The Regulation Group, within the Economic Division, aims to support the Victorian Government to boost productivity, improve living standards and manage risks to the community. We do this by supporting the Government's agenda and providing advice across fields including improving how government agencies regulate, risk and insurance policy and identifying and delivering regulatory reforms to improve how businesses interact with State and local government.

The Regulation Group has fixed term (until 30 June 2023) VPS5 positions available.

As a VPS5 Senior Economist /Senior Policy Analyst in the Regulation Group, you will:

  • Work across multiple projects and policy issues and lead delivery of reforms and advice on policy issues
  • Work across Victorian Government agencies and local councils to reduce red tape and improve the environment for businesses in Victoria
  • Identify economic challenges facing Victoria and contribute to practical solutions;
  • Conduct research and analysis on complex economic, financial and/or public policy issues and data;
  • Communicate with, negotiate and influence, internal and external stakeholders;
  • Contribute to fostering a positive team culture and mentoring and supporting team members.
  • Participate in planning and decision-making in the team; and
  • Prepare timely, accurate and accessible advice on economic and policy issues for senior management and government.

 

About you

We are looking for candidates who demonstrate:

  • experience preparing high quality verbal and written briefings and advice;
  • experience in building relationships to persuade and achieve results;
  • demonstrated capacity to solve complex and ambiguous problems;
  • an eye for detail and ability to interpret and synthesise information;
  • experience working within a team and supporting others to collaborate and support others to pursue common goals; and
  • experience in providing timely and fit-for purpose advice and products for key stakeholders.

 

Experience in using economic frameworks and principles, and/or experience in policy development and advice would be advantageous. A higher level of technical ability, such as familiarity using R or Stata to analyse and interpret data, would also be advantageous but is not essential.
