Position Details

About the role:

The Civil Litigation Unit sits within the Civil Law Division of Victoria Police's Legal Services Department.  The Division also comprises the Employment Law Unit, Legal Discipline Advisory Unit, Commercial Law Unit, Spent Convictions Unit, and the Administrative Law and Privacy Legal Unit.  

As successful applicant, you will be an integral part of the legal team effectively leading and managing performance and workload, as well as managing and supporting the development of junior lawyers (VPSG2 – VPSG5). Your Unit is a blended team of sworn police members and VPS lawyers and case managers. This role may also include portfolio management responsibilities, as directed by the Superintendent, Civil Law Division.

Your duties will include:

  • High Volume case file management of litigation and coronial matters.
  • Developing Legal Strategy.
  • Self-management of case load and service delivery requirements.
  • Building and maintaining sound relationships with stakeholders and partners.
  • Building and promoting the integrity of Victoria Police Legal Services Department.
  • Managing a team of lawyers.
  • Mentoring and development of junior lawyers.
  • Some appearance work for Victoria Police in the higher courts and relevant tribunals if required.


As the successful applicant, you will have:

  • Extensive knowledge of relevant legislation (particularly in relation to Torts) and experience in the management of complex and sensitive court matters.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience in policy and Government liaison.
  • Demonstrated experience appearing before courts and tribunals or briefing counsel to do so.
  • Sound leadership and decision-making skills.
  • Experience managing small teams.
  • Strong emotional intelligence and self-awareness.
  • Resilience and the ability to manage competing priorities and high demand.
  • A current Unrestricted Practicing Certificate.


Requirements and relevant information:

  • One (1) x full-time, 12-month fixed term position, commencing 29 January 2024, end date 26 January 2025.
  • From 1 December 2023 the salary range for a VPS6 role is $130,673 to $174,869 (covering salary ranges VPSG 6.1 and VPSG 6.2).  Although it is standard practice for selected candidates to commence at the base of the salary range, genuine consideration will be given to a commencement salary within the available range that is commensurate with the successful candidate's knowledge, skills and experiences. This will be subject to negotiations with the Hiring Manager in the course of the selection process and may include the provision of evidence of a higher income and/or supporting documentation (as required).
  • This position is located at Victoria Police Centre, 311 Spencer Street, Docklands.
  • The successful applicant will be required to undergo pre-employment checks which may include fingerprint checks and misconduct screening.
  • As a member of the Legal Services Department you will be located, on selection, at a specific office within a Division for a particular advertised opportunity. However, given occasional legal service demand issues you may be required at times to undertake varied work within the Department.  This supports the Departments commitment to a flexible and deployable legal workforce and professional development opportunities in a range of legal domains.
