About the role:

The Legal Services Department of Victoria Police provides authoritative, strategic and innovative legal services across a broad spectrum of criminal and civil legal areas in support of Victoria Police's delivery of services to the community.

Senior Lawyers within Legal Services Department have well developed skills in the practical and policy legal environment within which Victoria Police operates.  Many Victoria Police Lawyer roles also involve regular court appearance work in a range of jurisdictions.

The initial work location of this role is with the Office of Chief Examiner (OCE) involving operations under the Major Crime (Investigative Powers) Act 2004 (the Act).

The position will report to the Supervising Lawyer of the OCE Legal unit.  The position will require a close working relationship with the Chief Examiner, counsel engaged to act for the Chief Examiner, the Chief Commissioner of Victoria Police and members of Victoria Police of all ranks, the County and Supreme Court and State and/or Commonwealth law enforcement agencies, as appropriate.

Your duties will include:

  • Preparing and presenting applications under the Act in the Supreme Court of Victoria
  • Co-ordination of complex litigation, including prosecutions, arising under the Act
  • Provision of legal advice to members of Victoria Police and to the Chief Examiner
  • Preparation of affidavits, applications, submissions and associated legal documents

As the successful applicant, you will have:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification in law
  • Admission to practice as an Australian Lawyer (Unrestricted Practising Certificate)
  • The successful applicant will have a current Unrestricted Practising Certificate as an Australian Legal Practitioner, allowing you to supervise the legal practice of other lawyers.

Requirements and relevant information:

  • The successful applicant will be required to undergo National Security Vetting in order to achieve and maintain a security classification as determined by the Department Head.  To achieve this, applicants must be an Australian Citizen.
  • The successful candidate will be required to undergo pre-employment checks which may include fingerprint checks and misconduct screening.
  • As a member of the Legal Services Department you will be located, on selection, at a specific office within a Division for a particular advertised opportunity.  However given occasional legal service demand issues you may be required at times to undertake varied work within the Department.  This supports the Departments commitment to a flexible and deployable legal workforce and professional development opportunities in a range of legal domains.
  • Your initial placement within the Legal Practice Division, Legal Services Department will be at OCE, 8-14 Cobden Street, North Melbourne; however you may be required to work at any other location within the division or within another division of Legal Services Department as required.
