About the role:

This is an exciting opportunity to progress your career and obtain valuable experience working as an advocate in the Senior Advocacy Team within Victoria Police's Legal Services Department.  Victoria Police seek enthusiastic, skilled and dedicated advocates to prosecute a range of complex criminal and family violence related matters across multiple courts, jurisdictions and locations across the state.

The primary responsibilities of this role will involve preparing and appearing in complex matters across the state and provide legal advice on various matters. 

The role will require you to develop and maintain collaborative internal relationships as well as work with external stakeholders across agencies as part of a broad network that will ensure cooperative and proactive approaches to addressing community harm and reducing youth recidivism. This will include working closely with key internal and external stakeholders. 

You may also be required to provide training and development of Police Lawyers whilst ensuring compliance with legal professional supervision requirements.

As the successful applicant, you will have:

  • Admission to practice as an Australian Lawyer (Unrestricted Practising Certificate).

  • Ability to work in a team, in a developing and emerging work environment.

  • High level experience of written and oral advocacy matters including routinely appearing in complex indictable contested hearings.

  • High level of resilience and emotional intelligence.

  • High level understanding and experience as a court advocate across all jurisdictions, with extensive experience in criminal law.

  • A formal management qualification and formal teaching or training qualification would be advantageous.

  • A current and valid Drivers' Licence would be advantageous.

Requirements and relevant information:

  • There is one full-time, ongoing position available.

  • Applicants must be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or hold a valid work permit or visa.

  • The successful candidate will be required to undergo pre-employment checks which may include fingerprint checks and misconduct screening.

  • This position is located in Melbourne CBD but may occasionally require travel and or overnight stays due to circuit work.

  • As a member of the Legal Services Department you will be located, on selection, at a specific office within a Division for a particular advertised opportunity.  However, given occasional legal service demand issues you may be required at times to undertake varied work within the Department.  This supports the Departments commitment to a flexible and deployable legal workforce and professional development opportunities in a range of legal domains.
