About the role:

This is an exciting opportunity to progress your career and obtain experience working as a Senior Police Lawyer within Victoria Police.

Victoria Police are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic, skilled, and dedicated Senior Police lawyer to appear in both the criminal and civil jurisdictions of the Magistrates' Court of Victoria.   

The Senior Police Lawyer role operates within a team of Lawyers and sworn Victoria Police personnel, offering opportunities to tailor your skill to an array of matters of varying complexity. You will be expected to perform in court advocacy, caseload management and offer legal advice and information to a range of clients in the areas of intervention order proceedings, criminal prosecutions, Civil Law, and other areas as directed. 

The role affords the opportunity to develop and maintain collaborative relationships within the expansive Victoria Police workforce.  You will work with internal and external stakeholders across agencies as part of a broad network that will ensure cooperative and proactive approaches to addressing community harm.

The position offers ongoing professional development opportunities where you will be supported to develop and apply your skills to an array of matters.

As the successful applicant you will need to demonstrate an ability to handle demanding court lists, manage competing priorities effectively, be self-driven and solution focused. You will be required to apply a high level of attention to detail and have exceptional time-management skills. The successful applicant will be expected to work within a team environment where collaboration is modelled, and multiple members contribute to the ongoing case management of files, applications and briefs of evidence through to finalisation at court.

Your duties will include:

  • Appearing as an advocate, caseload management and providing legal advice/information to a range of clients in the areas of family violence, criminal prosecutions, civil law, and other areas as directed.
  • Developing and maintaining collaborative relationships within Victoria Police. 
  • Working with internal and external stakeholders across agencies to ensure cooperative and proactive approaches to addressing community harm.
  • Regularly attending and appearing in the Magistrates' Court, and Children's Court jurisdictions. 
  • Managing cases and the prosecution of family violence intervention orders, criminal related matters, firearms applications and licensing issues matters on behalf of Victoria Police. 
  • Attending court where you will be required to interview affected family members, affected persons (victims), respondents and witnesses.
  • Liaising with legal representatives and court staff. 
  • Providing support and assistance to Senior and Supervising Lawyers in the management of more complex cases.  You will also be required to provide professional guidance to Legal Support Officers as directed by your senior managers. 
  • Ability to work in a team and in a developing and emerging work environment.
  • A high level of resilience and emotional intelligence.

As the successful applicant, you will have:

  • Admission to practice as an Australian Lawyer, with an unrestricted practising certificate.
  • Current drivers' licence.

Requirements and relevant information:

  • This position is a full-time ongoing position.
  • The location of the advertised position is Dandenong Prosecutions Unit, 50 Langhorne St, Dandenong 3175.
  • Applicants must be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or hold a valid work permit or visa.
  • The successful candidate will be required to undergo pre-employment checks which may include fingerprint checks and misconduct screening.
  • In accordance with organisational policy, all Victoria Police employees are required to be fully vaccinated (including a booster vaccination) against COVID-19 or hold a valid medical exception. As such your employment with Victoria Police is subject to providing evidence of your vaccination status.
  • As a member of the Legal Services Department you will be located, on selection, at a specific office within a Division for a particular advertised opportunity.  However, given occasional legal service demand issues you may be required at times to undertake varied work within the Department.  This supports the Departments commitment to a flexible and deployable legal workforce and professional development opportunities in a range of legal domains.
