About the role:

This role provides the dedicated digital forensic capability of the newly formed Cryptocurrency Operations Team within the Cybercrime Squad.  The team represents Victoria Police's foremost capability for supporting investigations of cryptocurrency enabled crime and is responsible for guiding broader organisational capability uplift in this field.  The Senior Forensic Officer reports to the Team Leader (Detective Sergeant) of the Cryptocurrency Operations Team and will support investigators within this team to provide specialist services to Victoria Police.  Stakeholders include specialist investigative units within Crime Command, regional investigators, Commonwealth and interstate law enforcement agencies and other areas within the Department of Justice and Community Safety.  A primary focus of the Cryptocurrency Operations Team is to contribute to the strategic priorities of the Victoria Police Cybercrime Strategy 2022-2027.

Your duties will include:

The provision of digital forensic capability and associated technical support to the Cryptocurrency Operations Team.  The role involves a broad range of responsibilities including:

  • The interrogation of digital devices and IT systems in support of criminal investigations involving cryptocurrency,
  • Attendance ‘in the field' to support search warrants and cryptocurrency seizure operations,
  • Research, development, and operationalisation of best practice in cryptocurrency digital forensics,
  • Stakeholder engagement with law enforcement nationally and internationally regarding cryptocurrency focused digital forensics and investigation, 
  • Working closely with and developing the technical capability of investigators within the Cryptocurrency Operations Team and others within the Cybercrime Squad,
  • Supporting the development of training for frontline through to specialist investigators regarding cryptocurrency in the context of law enforcement operations,
  • Obtaining and/or maintaining the necessary certifications/qualifications required to operate a range of digital forensic tools.     

As the successful applicant, you will have:

  • Digital forensic experience using a range of industry standard tools,
  • Experience in the management and handling of digital assets,
  • Proven ability to research, identify and implement solutions to rapidly evolving challenges,
  • Proven excellent written and oral communication skills enabling the transfer of information and knowledge about complex technology concepts to a range of audiences.

Requirements and relevant information:

  • One (1) x full-time, ongoing position available.
  • This position is located at Victoria Police Centre, 311 Spencer Street, Docklands.
  • The successful applicant will be required to undergo National Security Vetting, achieve and maintain a security classification as determined by the Department Head.  To achieve this, applicants must be an Australian Citizen.
  • The successful candidate will be required to undergo pre-employment checks which may include fingerprint checks and misconduct screening.
  • In accordance with the Acting Chief Health Officer's Direction – COVID-19 Mandatory Vaccination (Workers) Directions, you are required to be fully vaccinated (this includes a booster vaccination) and your employment with Victoria Police is subject to proof of vaccination.
