About the role:
This is an exciting opportunity to progress your career and obtain experience working as a Police Lawyer within Victoria Police. Victoria Police's Legal Services Department is enhancing its advocacy response in order to meet the expansion of court networks and jurisdictions across Victoria.
Victoria Police is seeking to meet this demand with a team of enthusiastic, skilled, and dedicated Police Lawyers to prosecute a range of complex family violence intervention order matters across multiple court jurisdictions. As the successful applicant, you will need to demonstrate an ability to handle busy court lists and to manage competing priorities effectively. This role offers an opportunity to tailor your skills to an array of matters that vary in complexity.

Your duties will include:
- Appearing as an advocate, caseload management and providing legal advice/information to a range of clients in the areas of family violence, criminal prosecutions, civil law, and other areas as directed.
- Developing and maintaining collaborative relationships within Victoria Police.
- Working with internal and external stakeholders across agencies to ensure cooperative and proactive approaches to addressing community harm.
- Regularly attending and appearing in the Magistrates' Court, and Children's Court jurisdictions.
- Managing cases and the prosecution of family violence intervention orders, criminal related matters, firearms applications, and licensing issues matters on behalf of Victoria Police.
- Undertaking administrative duties as required.
- Attending court where you will be required to interview affected family members, affected persons (victims), respondents and witnesses.
- Liaising with legal representatives and court staff.
- Providing support and assistance to Senior and Supervising Lawyers in the management of more complex cases. You will also be required to provide professional guidance to Legal Support Officers as directed by your senior managers.
As the successful applicant, you will have:
- Admission to practice as an Australian Lawyer.
- Current drivers' licence.
- Ability to work in a team and in a developing and emerging work environment.
- A high level of resilience and emotional intelligence.
Requirements and relevant information:
- One (1) x full-time, ongoing position available.
- The position is located at Bairnsdale Police Prosecutions Unit, 45 Main Street, Bairnsdale.
- Applicants must be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or hold a valid work permit or visa.
- The successful applicant will be required to undergo pre-employment checks which may include fingerprint checks and misconduct screening.
- In accordance with organisational policy, all Victoria Police employees are required to be fully vaccinated (including a booster vaccination) against COVID-19 or hold a valid medical exception. As such your employment with Victoria Police is subject to providing evidence of your vaccination status.
- As a member of the Legal Services Department you will be located, on selection, at a specific office within a Division for a particular advertised opportunity. However, given occasional legal service demand issues you may be required at times to undertake varied work within the Department. This supports the Departments commitment to a flexible and deployable legal workforce and professional development opportunities in a range of legal domains.
