About the role

Reporting to the Manager, Field Specialists, the Chief Remote Pilot leads and manages a team responsible for providing expertise to support frontline compliance and enforcement actions across the state. You will lead and manage a team that provides expertise in the management and use of remote piloted aircraft (drones), aligned to EPA's strategic priorities to prevent harms to Victorian communities and the environment from pollution and waste. 

This is a senior role for an experienced and licensed remote aircraft pilot that wants to contribute to the success of the EPA as it enters a new era of environmental protection in Victoria. 

Duties

  • Lead and manage a team to achieve high standards of performance, accountability, collaboration, ethics, and integrity; manage the allocation of resources, budgets, business and project planning and reporting; and demonstrate a strong commitment to a positive culture and the development of staff.  
  • Prepare and maintain all documentation required for EPA to achieve and maintain its Remote Operator Certificate issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA), including the Operations Manual and Operations Library. Lead liaison with CASA and other regulatory authorities as required.
  • Be responsible for all remotely piloted aircraft operations ensuring they are safe and legal.
  • Provide specialist expertise in remotely piloted aircraft operations, coordinating and delivering high quality imagery outputs in an accurate, timely and safe manner to support regulatory work.
  • Lead a centre of expertise including the upskilling of regional operations teams and other parts of EPA.
  • Lead the RPAS team in the response to environmental and public health emergencies and incidents and to support intra agency collaboration.

Skills and experience

  • A proven record of achievement in a senior RPAS role leading a Team through change to achieve high performance and a positive organisational culture. 
  • A Remote Pilot Licence or equivalent approved by CASA for the operations of remotely piloted aircraft in regulatory operations undertaken by EPA.
  • Completed Chief Remote Pilot training approved by CASA.
  • Senior level experience in the operation of large (25kgs) remotely piloted aircraft and training, preferably in a law enforcement or regulatory environment.
    • A detailed understanding of CASA regulations relating to the use of remote piloted aircraft.
    • Knowledge and understanding of Victoria's environmental protection laws.
