Position Details

What we do

The Auditor-General is an independent officer of the Victorian Parliament, supported by around 190 staff, to provide assurance to Parliament and the Victorian community about how effectively public sector agencies are providing services and using public money. We achieve this through an annual program of financial and performance audits of state and local government public sector entities.

What you'll do

You're a dynamic and adaptable emerging leader with a demonstrated ability to motivate and coach others to achieve their goals. You'll manage the major parts of assigned financial audits and sometimes assist with Parliamentary reports, ensuring the work is delivered to quality standards, on time and within budget. You'll achieve this by:

  • Presenting audit findings, evidence, conclusions and recommendations to a range of other professionals and senior stakeholders
  • Providing direction, allocating tasks to and supervising junior team members
  • Identifying audit risks and designing appropriate risk responses
  • Exercising sound judgment in managing audit issues and escalating contentious matters as needed
  • Taking part in strategic and annual planning processes
  • Contributing to developing and implementing audit and business improvement projects as needed

You may also act as a team leader on some engagements when needed.

Who you are

Successful candidates can demonstrate:

  • Sound working knowledge of Australian Accounting and Auditing Standards and legislative and regulatory requirements
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to quickly process and convey complex technical concepts in plain English
  • Strong written and oral reporting skills, along with the ability to present evidence, conclusions and recommendations
  • A history of success in undertaking audit engagements and exercising sound judgment when responding to or escalating issues
  • An adaptive and professional approach when establishing and maintaining effective relationships
  • Success in motivating and overseeing junior team members using a coaching and mentoring approach

Please note that weekday travel around Victoria may be required.

Qualification requirements

  • Tertiary qualifications in Finance, Accounting or STEM preferably at post-graduate level
  • Full professional membership with CPA Australia, CAANZ or the IPA
