The Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine is Australia’s most comprehensive forensic medical facility. We serve the Victorian community and the whole of the Victorian justice system, especially the courts.

We provide the justice system with evidence to underpin safe convictions and appropriate acquittals. Our doctors help investigate deaths reported to the Coroner, examine alleged offenders and assess, treat and support victims of crime.

The Donor Tissue Bank of Victoria supports patients and their families by providing safe tissues for transplantation and medical research.

Position Details

The Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine (VIFM) provides an impartial and professional forensic service to Victoria Police, the Courts and Office of Public Prosecutions, the Coroner, and the legal profession and also undertakes teaching and research in the field.

The Forensic Physician is based in Melbourne and provides a range of high quality forensic medical and related services at locations throughout the state, including rural and regional areas.

Forensic Physicians are also involved in teaching and training services by the Institute and the Department of Forensic Medicine at Monash University. They work as a member of a close knit, highly motivated team of forensic practitioners and interact with a wide spectrum of doctors, scientists, legal practitioners, police and members of the public.

To be successful in this position, you will have demonstrated experience in:

  • medical practice and the capacity to perform competent and complex clinical examinations and collection of forensic evidence
  • understanding of standards and legal issues together  with the medical and social complexities of providing forensic services
  • working proactively in a highly motivated team of professionals
  • effective communication and the ability to communicate complex medical concepts in simple terms
  • teaching and research
  • high-level ethics and professionalism.

Prerequisites for the role of Forensic Physician include:

  • Current AHPRA Registration as a Medical Practitioner
  • Current driver's licence & WWC Check
  • A clear criminal record
  • Postgraduate qualifications in forensic medicine or related field (or progress towards such a qualification).

This is a part-time position (50% FTE) and the specific work pattern can be negotiated with the successful candidate.

The successful candidate will be appointed as a Level 1 Specialist under the VIFM Specialist Forensic Pathologists and Physicians Enterprise Agreement. 

Candidates should be aware that due to the nature of the work that VIFM undertakes, staff may be exposed to equipment, content and concepts of a graphical nature, such as forensic material, descriptions and images medical reports, and mortuary/laboratory environments.
