Position Details

The AVS Intellectual Property (IP) Manager plays a key role in supporting intellectual property registration decision-making and management associated with the AVS IP portfolio to help maximise industry adoption and impact of Agriculture Victoria Research technology inventions.

1)        Instruct and liaise with AVS' external patent attorneys, on behalf of AVS or the Department, in the commissioning, registration and maintenance of patent applications, including assisting in patent attorney drafting, preparation and prosecution of patent applications in multiple jurisdictions.

2)        Manage the AVS registered intellectual property portfolio, databases and associated reporting, including AVS' IP portfolio management information system, Inteum.

3)        Optimise AVS' application of Inteum and Inteum Analytics databases and software such as by integrating Inteum with related IP search tools (e.g. PatSnap).

4)        Assist in the development and implementation of the AVS and Department intellectual property protection and commercialisation policies and strategies, including: assisting the prosecution of global patent portfolios; providing patentability, validity and freedom-to-operate opinions; and providing written and verbal advice to inform IP asset strategies of AVS and the Department.

5)        Support the COO and AVS operations team in the identification of background IP and competing technologies relevant to research and development projects through techniques such as patent searching, IP landscaping and scientific literature reviews.

6)        Assist the Department in identifying research outcomes suited to commercial routes to market and assist to develop and implement IP strategies to protect those outcomes.

7)        Assist AVS in implementing IP protection strategies to defend AVS intellectual property.

8)        Assist in the conduct of AVS IP portfolio reviews and with the regular and ad hoc IP reporting requirements of AVS and the Department.

9)        Prepare and file applications for Plant Breeder's Rights and Trademarks.

10)     Assist in the education and training of AVS and Department staff in relation to IP protection issues as they relate to the protection of novel research and development inventions as IP rights.

11)     Provide AVS with updates and advice in relation to IP law.

12)     Adopt and apply OH&S policies and procedures to ensure a safe work environment.
