About Public Transport Victoria (PTV)

Public Transport Victoria (PTV) is a statutory authority that acts as a system authority for all public transport and an advocate for public transport users. We are a single contact point for customers wanting information on public transport services, fares, tickets and initiatives. PTV aims to improve public transport in Victoria by ensuring better coordination between modes, facilitating expansions to the network, auditing public transport assets, promoting public transport as an alternative to the car.

About the role

The Rail Technology Strategist & Asset Officer will focus on developing the technology asset strategy for the Signals asset class. The safe and efficient operation of the Signals asset class ensures the safe movement of passengers across the network. It's an exciting area where new technologies like computer-based train controls are already starting to transform the asset base and challenge the traditional ways of working. By incorporating your asset management and technical skills, you will formulate an optimal approach to the management the asset.

In today's network the Signals asset class encompasses the electro-mechanical systems that support the management of rail traffic across the State's rail network. It encompasses systems that detect, and respond to, the position of trains across the network and includes systems such as: track circuits, axle counters, level crossing protection systems and illuminated signals. However the State is delivering projects that are transforming the Signals asset class such as computer-based train control (CBTC) systems, and with the emergence of other intelligent transport system technologies.  We need you and your expertise to develop the Signals Asset Class Strategy and coordinate other risk, condition, and criticality assessments to help us prioritise our investments. This will involve collaborating with technical specialists, operators, project teams, developers and other stakeholders both internally and externally to ensure that the Signals assets are managed sustainably and strategically.

What we're looking for


  • Outstanding stakeholder management, and communication skills (both written & verbal) will be critical to the success in the role.
  • Ability to develop written concepts and plans to inform key stakeholders on operational and strategic intent for the asset class.


  • Experience working in the transport industry is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of Signals and overhead maintenance and renewal.
  • Knowledge of asset management and system life cycle management.
  • Working knowledge of the Asset Management Accountability Framework.
  • Knowledge of infrastructure operations and processes.
