About the role:

Victoria Police Financial Services Department is a modern, professional finance team which plays an important role in supporting frontline policing operations on behalf of almost 18,000 officers who work every day to keep the Victorian community safe.

The Department undertakes a range of financial management responsibilities across Victoria Police, offering unique career and professional development opportunities.

As a successful applicant, you will be an integral team member within the Financial Accounting & Compliance Branch (FACB) in producing Police annual financial statements and ensuring the quality, accuracy and completeness of the financial information disclosures. You will also play a key role in monthly financial reporting for Victoria Police and the production and submission of other data critical for the preparation of general government materials.

The branch also manages the asset management, trust accounting and treasury activities of Victoria Police and has carriage of financial corporate governance in relation to the Victorian Government's Standing Directions, Taxation and Insurance.

In this role, you will work primarily in the Corporate Reporting Unit and will be responsible for providing high-quality accounting and financial services across the organisation.

The role provides opportunities to develop your professional networks within Victoria Police and across the Victoria Government. Engagement with external stakeholders from other agencies including the Department of Justice and Community Safety and the Department of Treasury and Finance and within Victoria Police, including the Financial Services Department, Human Resource Command, Legal Services, Infrastructure, Procurement and Transport branches is a key part of this role.

This role reports directly to the Corporate Reporting Manager, Financial Accounting and Compliance

Your duties will include:

  • Assist with the preparation of month-end and year-end accounting journals and financial reporting
  • Assist with the preparation of the Annual Financial Statements in compliance with the Australian Accounting Standards (AASB), Financial Reporting Directives (FRDs) and Financial Management Act 1994 (FMA);
  • Assist with the monthly reporting to the Department of Treasury and Finance (DTF) by SRIMS;
  • Assist with the financial variances analysis to the Department of Justice and Community Safety (DJCS);
  • Stakeholder management - engagement with internal stakeholders which includes but is not limited to working with Shared Services, Budget Management & Analysis, Human Services, Legal Services. And external stakeholders which includes engaging extensively throughout the year with the Victorian Auditor-General's Office (VAGO) in relation to the financial year-end audit;
  • Assist with producing reports for Budget Estimates, PAEC and Department of Premier & Cabinet on Contractors/Consultants/Labour Hire and Professional Services; and
  • Assist with various cash management functions and submitting reports to DTF and Treasury Corporation of Victoria (TCV).
  • Supporting management for reporting into the Victoria Police Audit and Risk Committee (ARC);

As the successful applicant, you will have:

  • A sound knowledge and application of the following:
  • accounting principles & standards;
  • financial reporting requirements;
  • internal controls on financial processes; and
  • relevant financial principles, regulations, policies, procedures and processes associated with a large organisation
  • Demonstrated ability to apply technical accounting knowledge and experience to support advice to stakeholders
  • Experience in preparing Annual Financial Statements; and
  • Work as part of a collaborative team

Requirements and relevant information:

  • One (1) x full-time, fixed term position available for 12 months.
  • This position is located at Victoria Police Centre, 311 Spencer Street, Docklands.
