About the role:

An opportunity exists for an experienced Legal Policy Officer within the Policy and Legislation Division at Victoria Police to work in the Legislative Policy Unit.

Legislative Policy Unit

The functions of the unit include:

  • Considering legislative or policy proposals initiated outside Victoria Police and developing organisational responses to external agencies
  • Assessing, developing and managing internal requests for legislative change
  • Co-ordinating responses to Cabinet submissions on behalf of Victoria Police
  • Providing advice and support on legislative change across Victoria Police.

Your duties will include:

  • Undertake legal research and develop whole-of-organisation positions and responses to Cabinet submissions and other Government papers
  • Prepare reform proposals and briefings for internal and external audiences
  • Provide authoritative advice to various stakeholders within Victoria Police on proactive and Government-led legislative reforms
  • Negotiate reform outcomes with other Government partners.

As the successful applicant, you will require the following skills:

  • Ability to work under pressure to produce high quality outputs
  • Ability to work cohesively in a small team
  • Strong organisational awareness and prioritisation skills, and the ability to present information to varying audiences
  • Excellent writing and analytical skills
  • Flexible and innovative thinking
  • Understanding of legal and public policy trends and issues
  • A tertiary qualification in law, public policy, or other relevant area along with an understanding of Cabinet and parliamentary processes would be highly regarded.

Requirements and relevant information:

  • One (1) x full-time, ongoing position available.
  • This position is located at Victoria Police Centre, 311 Spencer Street, Docklands.
  • Applicants must be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or hold a valid work permit or visa.
  • The successful applicant will be required to undergo pre-employment checks which may include fingerprint checks and misconduct screening.
  • In accordance with organisational policy, all Victoria Police employees are required to be fully vaccinated (including a booster vaccination) against COVID-19 or hold a valid medical exception. As such your employment with Victoria Police is subject to providing evidence of your vaccination status.
