  • x5 Full time maximum term position up to 18 months (part time considered)
  • Salary based on experience, range: $84,626 - $98,901 plus super
  • Up to $15,900 in salary packaging and hybrid WFH & office model

About the role:
In this position, you will provide legal advice and handle cases in the field of civil law, with a specific focus on Migration Law. You will also serve as a lawyer for clients in both court and tribunals, including duty services, casework and advice services. Your role will involve advocating effectively for clients, paying particular attention to assisting asylum seekers to seek protection under the Migration Act 1958 and Migration Regulations 1994.

Additionally, you will have the opportunity to contribute to community legal education, participate in law reform initiatives, and engage in various projects undertaken by VLA. Building strong relationships with VLA personnel, court staff, community legal centres, and social justice organizations will also be an important aspect of this role.

This role is based at our Melbourne CBD office on Wurundjeri Country.

About you:

As our ideal candidate, you will possess:

  • Capacity to work as an advocate and caseworker in civil law matters, with a particular focus on assisting asylum seekers in Migration law matters, with knowledge of or practical experience in relevant court and tribunal procedures.
  • Ability to provide written and verbal legal advice within limited time constraints.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including the capacity to communicate effectively with clients who experience social and economic disadvantage.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with others and capacity to exercise self-care while undertaking challenging work.
