Position Details

This is an exciting opportunity to progress your career and obtain valuable experience working in the Legal Services Department at Victoria Police.  In order to address repeat victimisation, recidivism and unique offending across diverse demographics, more specialist courts are opening.

Victoria Police is seeking to meet this demand with an enthusiastic, skilled and dedicated team of Legal Support Officers and Police Lawyers who will prosecute a range of complex family violence intervention order matters across multiple court jurisdictions.  As the successful applicant, you will have the ability to efficiently handle busy court lists and to manage competing priorities effectively while providing administrative and practical support to your colleagues in court.

These roles offer an opportunity to tailor your skill to an array of matters that vary in complexity.  You will perform caseload management and provide support and assistance to Police Lawyers in providing information to a range of clients in the areas of Family Violence and criminal prosecutions, Civil Law, the Coroner's Court and other areas as required.  You will be required to complete tasks on the prosecution's case management system, review incoming briefs for distribution to Police Lawyers and Prosecutors, liaise with internal and external representatives including Police members and Lawyers about court applications and assist Police Lawyers at court with the coordination and management of daily court lists.  You will also be responsible for the preparation of court lists and briefs in advance of hearing dates. These roles provide the opportunity to develop and maintain collaborative relationships within the expansive Victoria Police workforce.  You will work with a range of stakeholders across agencies as part of a broad network that will ensure cooperative and proactive approaches to addressing community harm.

While these roles will be challenging and dynamic, they will provide you with a rewarding experience and prospects for career progression.

If you hold a legal qualification (i.e. LLB) and are successful in your application and appointment to this position, you will be eligible to enter this role at a VPS 2.2 grade.  The developmental opportunity available for legally qualified Legal Support Officers allows for the granting of a delegation by the Chief Commissioner of Police for the employee to appear in Court matters on behalf of Victoria Police under the supervision of Senior Police Lawyers.  We offer this as an opportunity for legally qualified applicants to progress their development in this role and the opportunity for progression into higher grade roles.

As the successful applicant, you will have:

  • Ability to work in a team, in a developing and emerging work environment.
  • High level of resilience and emotional intelligence.
  • A current Drivers' Licence.

Requirements and relevant information:

*Your usual place of work will be within the Prosecutions Division (Legal and Prosecutions Specialist Branch), Legal Services Department, however you may be required to work at any other division within the Department / Command as required.

* This position may require you to work outside normal hours from time to time.

* As a member of the Legal Services Department you will be located, on selection, at a specific office within a Division for a particular advertised opportunity.  However, given occasional legal service demand issues you may be required at times to undertake varied work within the Legal Services Department.  This supports the Department's commitment to a flexible and deployable legal workforce and professional development opportunities in a range of legal domains.

* Positions are available in a variety of locations including Melbourne CBD, Broadmeadows and Bendigo.
