  • VPS Grade 3: $74,580 - $90,558 plus superannuation.

The Local Government Inspectorate is seeking a Business Support Officer to provide a critical role supporting with requests for information, advice or assisting people with complaints in relation to Local Government.

 

About the Business Unit

Under the leadership of the Chief Municipal Inspector the Local Government Inspectorate (LGI) is an independent administrative office supported by the Department of Premier and Cabinet (DPC).  It is the dedicated integrity agency for local government focussing on investigations for breaches and compliance with the Local Government Act 1989 (Act).

The key functions of the Inspectorate include:

  • Investigating alleged breaches of the Act including electoral provisions
  • Targeted governance reviews and examinations of compliance by local council with the governance requirements in the Act;
  • Prosecuting offences under the Act
  • Referring matters of serious misconduct by councillors
  • Elevating matters of gross misconduct of a councillor to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal;
  • Collaboration with the Victorian Government Solicitor to undertake prosecutions for breaches of the Act;

About the Role

The Business Support Officer is the first point of contact for the Local Government Inspectorate dealing with requests for information, advice or assisting people with complaints in relation to Local Government.

Key requirements of this position include customer relations and communications skills in the context of a regulatory environment.  The Business Support officer is also required to provide business reporting, administration support to the unit and liaison with other corporate business areas within the State Government.

This is a hybrid role offering 2 days remote and 3 days onsite.

Some of your duties will include:

  • Responsible for the first point of contact for all enquiries, approaches and correspondence.
  • Receipt and response to incoming calls and complaints.
  • Administrative support and assisting business functions of the office including travel bookings, email management, team meeting minutes and coordination.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Knowledge of Legislation:  A knowledge of the Local Government Act 2020 (Vic) or experience working in a regulatory environment.
  • Advanced Computer Skills: Uses a wide range of software application features for word processing excel spreadsheets, databases, registers, etc.  Assists others with problem-solving on IT systems Experience in using finance systems such as oracle or other accounts payable systems, and experience with case management systems.
  • Communication skills: Demonstrates high level verbal and written communication skills, ensuring appropriate format, style and approach is taken to deliver best outcomes for the Inspectorate.
  • Planning and Organising: Identifies processes, tasks and resources required to achieve a goal: Identifies more and less critical activities and operates accordingly, reviewing and adjusting as required: Develops and implements systems and procedures to guide work and track progress:  Recognises barriers and finds effective ways to deal with them.

Requirements

  • A business or administration qualification is desirable.
  • Knowledge of and/or experience working with legislation.
  • A current Victoria Drivers Licence is desirable but not necessary.
