About Us
The Magistrates' Court of Victoria (MCV) is a jurisdiction within the Court Services Victoria statutory authority and has a long history of providing justice for the people of Victoria in metropolitan and regional courts across the state. The Court determines in excess of 300,000 cases per annum at 51 venues, equating to approximately 90 percent of all cases that come before Victorian courts each year. The Court aims to be an innovative, accessible, and responsive court that provides quality services to the Victorian community.
This Court operates a range of initiatives to assist accused persons and others involved in the court system who are experiencing issues of social or cultural disadvantage, including substance abuse, disability, mental illness, family violence or cognitive impairment. These include the Assessment and Referral Court (ARC) List, a specialist court list that has been designed to meet the needs of accused persons who have a mental illness and/or a cognitive impairment.
About the Role
Registrars of the Magistrates' Court, including the ARC List Registrar, perform a wide range of administrative tasks throughout the Court's registries in Victoria. These may include in-court (bench clerk) duties, clientcontact (telephone and counter) enquiries, and backof-office administrative responsibilities. The role may be performed in a range of jurisdictional contexts, including Civil, Criminal, Family Violence, VOCAT, Diversion, as well as the Children's and Coroner's Courts and other jurisdictions (VCAT, County and Supreme Courts) as required.
Registrars are also required to exercise powers conferred under the Magistrates' Court Act 1989, other Acts and Rules. These powers involve the preparation and processing of administrative and statutory documentation and the exercise of discretionary quasijudicial and statutory powers using professional judgement in applying legislative requirements, established rules and precedents, and the Court's Practice Directions
This Assessment and Referral Court (ARC) List Registrar role operates within the Magistrates' Court in a complex, demanding and sensitive environment. Performing a dual function across case workload coordination and Registrar duties that requires the capacity to exercise sound judgement, liaise effectively with the Judiciary, members of the broader ARC List team, senior officers of the court and government departments.
About You
The ARC List Registrar is responsible, in conjunction with the Senior Registrar and lead ARC List Magistrate, for co-ordinating registry functions of the ARC Lists in the Gippsland region. This includes managing case flow within the Lists, ensuring legislative requirements are met and building relationships with key stakeholders.
This role has significant technical registry components as well as requiring regular interaction with accused persons who are experiencing a serious mental illness or a cognitive impairment.
