Position Details

The role of the Family Violence Respondent Practitioner, LGBTI is integral to the Court's response to recommendations made by the RCFV. The Family Violence Respondent Practitioner LGBTI holds specialist knowledge of both family violence and the needs and issues faced by LGBTI partners and their families. This position forms part of a team based at the Neighbourhood Justice Centre (NJC) undertaking outreach to a number of MCV sites. The Team will pilot and refine the new responsive support services for LGBTI families moving through the court system, including establishing appropriate referral pathways to behavior change programs and support comprised of a Team Leader, LGBTI; an Applicant Practitioner, LGBTI; and Respondent Practitioner, LGBTI, which will be based at a metropolitan MCV site/s.

This Court based team will work collaboratively with the Perpetrator Interventions Project (PIP) team, managed by the Senior Project Manager, PIP, to design, develop and pilot an innovative service and support model for LGBTI partners and their families, who are engaged in the Family Violence Court system. The role of this team is to enhance the safety of relationship partners and children who attend at Court because they are experiencing family violence, and hold perpetrators of family violence accountable for their actions. They will provide non-legal information, support and referral for people who are respondents to an application for an intervention order or involved in criminal proceedings arising from or including allegations of family violence.

The Family Violence Respondent Practitioner, LGBTI, will work with the Family Violence Applicant Practitioner, Family Violence Registrar, other court registrars, police prosecutors, lawyers and court support services at the court premises, and will liaise with community based support services. They may be required to provide information to magistrates in a courtroom, particularly as the Respondent Practitioner, LGBTI, is supporting MCV to trial services for the LGBTI population, whose needs have been previously unmet. They will establish and maintain relationships with community agencies and support services so effective referrals are made to ensure the safety of family violence applicants.
