Position Details

  • Provide support and non legal advice to Aboriginal accused as well as Aboriginal victims of crime coming in contact with the Heidelberg court.
  • Provide advice and report to the Magistrates' and Children's Court and relevant staff, in relation to services and programs that are available to assist Aboriginal accused and/or young person before the Court.
  • Promote and build awareness of the role of the Koori Court within the Aboriginal community and other key government, non-government, community stakeholders and other accountantabilities as viewed in the Key Selection Criteria.

The Koori Court Officer is a specialist role, responsible for a number of administrative, promotional and liaison tasks with the Koori Court. The Koori Court Officer will work within the Koori Court Division of the Magistrates' Court as required.

The Koori Court Officer's role aims to improve the court experience for Koori people and their families. The role will assist the Court in providing a more culturally appropriate response to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities in the criminal division through:

  • identifying and maintaining a register of services and programs offered by local service providers
  • educating the Aboriginal community in the operation of the Magistrates' Koori Court
  • maintaining and fostering links between the Magistrates' Court and the Aboriginal community.

The Koori Court Officer will be responsible for providing cultural advice to the Court, assistance to Aboriginal persons before the Koori Court and their families regarding court outcomes and obligations.

The Koori Court Officer must have relationship management skills which are of a high standard to work and build on when collaborating with diverse groups of key stakes such as; Koori clients, Koori families, Elders and Respected Persons (ERPs), Magistrates, Youth Justice Workers, Department of Justice and Regulation-Corrections, Victoria Police Prosecution team, Community Organisations, and Legal Representatives, such as Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service (VALS).
