Court Services Victoria provides corporate services and facilities to support the performance of the judicial, quasi-judicial and administrative functions of Victoria's courts and tribunal, Judicial College and Judicial Commission. 

Collectively, Victoria's Supreme, County, Magistrates', Children's, and Coroners courts, the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT), the Judicial College of Victoria, the Judicial Commission of Victoria, and Court Services Victoria (CSV) are referred to as the ‘Courts Group'.

The Magistrates' Court of Victoria (MCV) is the first level of the Victorian court system and is a jurisdiction within the Court Services Victoria.  It has a long history of providing justice for the people of Victoria in metropolitan and regional courts across the state. The Court determines in excess of 300,000 cases per annum at 51 locations, equating to approximately 90 percent of all cases that come before Victorian courts each year. The Court aims to be an innovative, accessible, and responsive court that provides quality services to the Victorian community.

About the role

The Magistrates' Court of Victoria (MCV) is seeking a dedicated and skilled Family Violence Applicant Practitioner (FVAP) to join our Family Violence team.  As a specialist in family violence practice, the FVAP forms part of a dedicated team within the Court's family violence jurisdiction, working alongside the Family Violence Registrar (FVR) and Family Violence Respondent Practitioner (FVRP).

Together, this team is responsible for enhancing the safety of women and children attending court due to family violence, while contributing to a system that holds perpetrators accountable for their behaviour.

The team provides non‑legal information and practical support to individuals who have experienced family violence, conducting immediate safety risk assessments, developing safety plans, and facilitating referrals to community agencies for ongoing support, counselling and longer‑term safety planning.

The FVAP works collaboratively with the FVRP, FVR, court registrars, police prosecutors, lawyers and court support services on site at the court. The role also involves liaising closely with community-based support services and, where required, providing information to magistrates during court proceedings. A key aspect of the role is establishing and maintaining strong relationships with community agencies to ensure effective and timely referrals that prioritise the safety and wellbeing of family violence applicants.

You will play a vital role in enhancing the safety of women and children attending court, while contributing to a system that holds perpetrators accountable. This is a public‑facing role requiring attendance on‑site, with some remote support provided to other court locations as needed.

About you

• Relevant qualifications in social work, psychology, social sciences, or related field, in addition to demonstrated strong experience working with people who have experienced family violence.

• Demonstrated experience conducting comprehensive, MARAM‑aligned risk assessments and safety plans.

• Skills and experience in crisis support, risk assessment, safety planning and case coordination.

• Strong understanding of the Family Violence Protection Act 2008, Victoria Police Code of Practice, and family violence risk frameworks.

• Knowledge of issues intersecting with family violence, including homelessness, mental health, AOD, cognitive impairment, financial stress and legal system navigation.
