About Us
Court Services Victoria provides corporate services and facilities to support the performance of the judicial, quasi-judicial and administrative functions of Victoria's courts and tribunal, Judicial College and Judicial Commission.
Collectively, Victoria's Supreme, County, Magistrates', Children's, and Coroners courts, the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT), the Judicial College of Victoria, the Judicial Commission of Victoria, and Court Services Victoria (CSV) are referred to as the ‘Courts Group'.
Our people enable the Courts Group to deliver on each jurisdictions own strategic priorities while also pursuing strategic opportunities that are interconnected and deliver benefits more broadly.
The Magistrates' Court of Victoria (MCV) is a jurisdiction within the Court Services Victoria statutory authority and has a long history of providing justice for the people of Victoria in metropolitan and regional courts across the state. The Court determines in excess of 300,000 cases per annum at 51 venues, equating to approximately 90 percent of all cases that come before Victorian courts each year. The Court aims to be an innovative, accessible, and responsive court that provides quality services to the Victorian community.
Specialist Courts and Programs (SCP) are the MCV Directorate responsible for driving the implementation and development of solution-focused and therapeutic approaches to justice. Our specialist responses address the underlying causes of offending behaviour and stop the “revolving door” of returning to court for individuals.
About the Role
Koori Support Practitioner supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander court users in a frontline capacity whilst providing advice and support to the broader Court Support Services team to provide a culturally competent
service to participants engaged in specialist programs. The Koori Support Practitioner is part of CSV's commitment to reducing the over-representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples in the criminal justice system.
The Koori Support Practitioner position sits within the Navigation and Triage Program in the Court Support Services Branch in Magistrates Court of Victoria. Navigation and Triage provides high level advice to judiciary, court staff, lawyers, and other stakeholders regarding the options available to meet the court user's support needs either in the community and/or through court support or specialist courts. The role seeks to respond to the causes of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples accessing the courts through identifying presenting needs then building referral pathways. In consultation, the Koori Support Practitioner roles will also identify and engage with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community and relevant stakeholders to establish collaborations and partnerships for best practice to service Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participants.
