Position Details

About the Business Unit:
Courts, Civil and Criminal Law Policy (CCCL) supports the Attorney-General and DJCS ministers to deliver criminal and civil law policy responsibilities by providing legal, policy, and reform expertise to DJCS and Justice Ministers. We work collaboratively with key entities across the justice system and the department to ensure policy reform is strategic, relevant, holistic and people-centred.

We are responsible for policy and legislative development in a broad range of areas, including human rights and equal opportunity law, civil evidence and procedure, guardianship and administration law, worker screening, elder abuse, supported decision-making, torts, negligence, defamation, open courts, succession, property and contempt./
CriminalLawPolicy is alsoa legislationandpolicy team withinCCCL.Weleadpolicy developmentand lawreformacrosscriminallawissues,includingthedeliveryoftheAttorney-General'slegislativereform program and national reform projects through the Standing Council of Attorneys-General. Our subject matterareasincludebail,summarycrime, counter-terrorism,familyviolence,offencereform(includingsexual offences), sentencing, criminal procedure (e.g. committal and appeal processes), jury directions and evidence.
About the Role:
The Senior Legal Policy Officer is responsible for the co-ordination, development, implementation, review and reform of policy and legislation across the Attorney-General's portfolio, whilst providing considered, informed and authoritative advice to the senior executives and government on key policy and legislation issues and system reform issues.
Some of your duties will include:
- Developing and implementing legal policy proposals and initiatives within the Attorney-General's reform program
- Providing considered, informed and authoritative advice to senior managers, senior executives and government on key policy and legislation issues and system reform issues
- Engaging, consulting and working collaboratively with our partners across the department, across government and the broader justice system to deliver on policy, strategy and reform projects.

About You:
As our ideal candidate, you will possess:
- Experience in legal policy and/or relevant legal practice
- Sound knowledge of and/or experience in Victorian Government policy development processes
- Excellent written communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to analyse complex operational, policy and/or legal issues, interpret legislation and provide accurate legal solutions.
