WorkSafe is relocating its headquarters to Geelong by June 2018. Prior to this date, this role will be based between 222 Exhibition Street, Melbourne and our Geelong interim office.

About the role

The Policy & Legislation Officer will assist the Legislation, Policy and Information Services (LPIS) Division in formulating effective legislative and statutory solutions. The role will work closely with the Senior Policy & Legislation Officer to lead or assist in the provision of authoritative advice to WorkSafe.

The Officer is responsible for the preparation of legislative amendments and subordinate instruments administered by WorkSafe Victoria and providing legal advice as required by the branch in relation to legislative process and policy and other matters as required, such as;

  • Developing and supporting the review and implementation of legislation and subordinate instruments administered by WorkSafe Victoria.
  • Providing authoritative, strategic and timely advice, including legal advice in connection with legislative proposals across a wide range of local and national forums.   
  • Preparing drafting instructions, briefings, Cabinet documents, discussion/consultation papers and reports as part of legislative, parliamentary, stakeholder engagement and other policy development processes.
  • Comprehensively reviewing a range of information products and forms that implement legislation administered by WorkSafe Victoria – these include guidance materials, standard letters, forms and publicity materials.
  • Investigate and research a wide range of legal and policy issues, engage effectively with both internal and external stakeholders, and communicate clearly, concisely and effectively.

The position will ensure the organisation plays an effective role in reducing the incidence of workplace injuries and disease in Victoria and providing an effective worker's compensation scheme.

Skills & experience

  • Demonstrated high level written and oral communication skills, and interpersonal skills to build and manage internal and external networks and relationships.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct thorough research and think laterally and analytically.
  • Experience in developing strategic and/or legal policy, gained in a Government environment in occupational health and safety, workers' compensation or other regulatory environments.
  • Experience in providing high quality and rigorous policy advice on a range of complex issues within limited time constraints.
