Managing Senior Solicitor

The Office of Public Prosecutions (OPP) is an independent statutory authority responsible for preparing and conducting criminal prosecutions in Victoria on behalf of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). Matters prosecuted by the DPP and the OPP involve serious crimes or matters that are of significance to the fair and effective operation of the Victorian criminal justice system. The OPP consists of the Solicitor for Public Prosecutions and a staff of approximately 400 providing legal and corporate support to the DPP, the Chief Crown Prosecutor and Crown Prosecutors in the exercise of their independent roles in the criminal justice system.

Managing Senior Solicitor, County Court Appeals and Contraventions

The Office of Public Prosecutions has an exciting opportunity to join our organisation as a Managing Senior Solicitor in our County Court Appeals and Contraventions division.

The successful candidate will have primary responsibility of providing operational leadership in the day to day management of their team of solicitors and legal support staff, as well as to the Manager, when required.

About the role:

The successful candidate is expected to:

  • Manage a team of solicitors and legal support staff; including managing files of staff, day to day workloads and quality assurance;
  • Work closely and collaboratively with the Manager in process and performance improvement;
  • Appear as an advocate in appeal hearings, bail applications, contravention hearings, judicial monitoring hearings, and other hearings as required;

The position is Melbourne based however occasional regional travel may be required. A vehicle and overnight accommodation are provided as required.

  • Have a thorough working knowledge of criminal law and its processes, and considerable experience in the criminal jurisdiction;
  • Have a proven ability to manage a diverse group of legal professionals;
  • Possess high level interpersonal communication skills and analytical skills, as well as an ability to implement innovative solutions to meet business needs
