What we do
The Auditor-General provides assurance to Parliament on the accountability and performance of the Victorian public sector.
To achieve this, VAGO annually conducts over 530 financial audits and numerous performance audits across a diverse range of portfolios including infrastructure, transport, health and social services, education, water, local government, insurance, justice, treasury and superannuation. Such a broad range of portfolios allows our people to gain unrivalled audit experience working throughout Melbourne and regional Victoria.

Our structure
We have two audit portfolios within VAGO: Performance Audit and Financial Audit. Our audit support function is split into the Office of the Auditor-General and Corporate Services.

Our independent audit role gives us exclusive access to our clients. This provides you the unique opportunity to learn about public sector operations, projects and activities that impacts the daily lives of over 6 million Victorians. While completing performance engagements, you'll look at the issues of effective service delivery, value for money, integrity and accountability. What you'll do

Senior Managers at VAGO are dynamic, adaptable leaders and preferably hold a postgraduate qualification. They are responsible for the delivery of a work program as an engagement leader within an allocated business area, which includes audits and business improvement initiatives. 

Senior Managers motivate and coach others to achieve their work goals.

VAGO's Senior Managers are rigorous and innovative in their approach to work and are motivated by the challenge of promoting continuous improvement in the Victorian public sector. Key responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

  • Contribute to innovations and continuous business improvement projects Establish networks with key stakeholders
  • Identify and monitor trends and translate these into meaningful contributions to VAGO's forward audit planning processes
  • Provide direction and allocate tasks to junior team members


  • Promote and model the established VAGO values set including:
  • Actively pursue learning and development opportunities that align with VAGO's goals
  • Contribute to continuous improvement by participating in audit meetings/debriefs and sharing lessons learned
  • Implementing changes that enhance work processes and systems
  • Represent and actively promote VAGO and the role of the Auditor-General at external seminars and events


  • Actively support Directors to monitor and manage the delivery of portfolio and group outputs and outcomes
  • Manage assigned performance audits and Parliamentary Reports as a team leader and deliver quality work within agreed budgets and timeframes
  • Manage resources (team members and/or external resources), including delegation and monitoring of audit work
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of business improvement projects as required 
  • Respond to risk, materiality, public interest perspectives and stakeholder sensitivities, including exercising sound judgement and proactively managing stakeholders and contentious issues arising from audits and/or Parliamentary reports
  • Contribute advanced audit expertise and knowledge to audit planning and complex decision making 
  • Present audit findings, evidence, conclusions and recommendations to your team and audit clients with support from your team seniors
  • Demonstrate an understanding of auditing standards and guidelines, audit methodology and processes (or processes of a similar nature e.g. evaluation, investigation)
  • Compliance
  • Meet corporate governance requirements by ensuring work is delivered in accordance with legislative and policy requirements

Records Management
Maintain records and content in VAGO's key systems (e.g. AmP, IPSAM)
Establish and maintain constructive relationships with: 

  • All Office of the Auditor-General, Corporate Services, Performance Audit and Financial Audit colleagues 
  • Performance engagement clients 
  • Other VAGO stakeholders as required

Contribute to a collegial and people centred organisation by:

What else you need to know

  • When not working from home, this  role is based at 35 Collins Street, Melbourne
  • Travel to various work locations throughout Victoria and Australia may be required
  • VAGO employees are required to comply with public sector requirements for ethical conduct, conflict of interest, Occupational Health & Safety, Diversity in the Workplace, the Human Rights Charter and Equal Opportunity principles
  • All VAGO employees are required to undergo a criminal record check and complete a Declaration of Independence on commencing employment and periodically thereafter

Who you are

You possess a track record of:

  • Achievement in planning and delivering complex audits, investigations and inquiries on time and on budget in accordance with the Australian Auditing and Assurance Standards.

What you've studied

  • Tertiary qualifications, preferably at postgraduate level, that reflect an ability to critically analyse, evaluate, and communicate results. This could include, but is not limited to, Economics, Arts, Law, STEM fields or a related field.
  • Extensive practical application and experience with auditing standards and methodologies or complex investigations, inquiries or reviews
