The Commission is an independent statutory body that promotes improvement in policies and practices affecting the safety and wellbeing of Victorian children and young people. It has a particular focus on vulnerable children and young people. The Commission is also the regulator for the Child Safe Standards and the Reportable Conduct Scheme. The Commission supports flexible and hybrid working models Mandatory Vaccinations The Commission is committed to providing and maintaining a working environment which is safe and without risk to the health of its workers and stakeholders. Employees will be required to be fully vaccinated (two doses plus a minimum of one booster) against preventable diseases, such as COVID-19, based on Victorian Chief Health Officer’s Directions and the Commission’s policies. Position Details

The Principal Legal Adviser (Regulatory) is part of the legal services team and is primarily focused on the Commission's regulatory functions (CSS and RCS).

The Principal Legal Adviser provides legal advice and services to the Principal Commissioner, the Commissioner for Aboriginal Children and Young People, Chief Executive Officer and Director, Regulation on regulatory matters including investigations under the RCS, information sharing, compliance and enforcement for both CSS and RCS, VCAT reviews and litigation. This role may also provide other legal advice and services within the Commission.

At times this position requires engagement with challenging and confronting subject matter. This role will best suit a candidate who is resilient, empathetic, a team player and able to work in a fast-paced environment.

 

In this role you will:

  • Provide authoritative advice on complex legal issues primarily related to the Commission's regulatory functions
  • Prepare briefings, reports, submissions, legal documents and correspondence required by the Commission
  • Manage staff within the team and actively contribute to the development of a positive and high-performing team culture
  • Develop and maintain relationships with co-regulators and other legal and law enforcement staff and professionals

About You

As our ideal candidate, you will have:

  • Strong stakeholder management and written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience in an area related to the safety and wellbeing of children and young people
  • A current Australian practicing certificate which entitles practice in Victoria as an employee of a legal practice
