Position Details

The Honourable Justice Lyons is seeking a legally qualified individual to be his Associate, commencing in July this year, for a period of 12 months.  

Justice Lyons undertakes a wide variety of work within the Commercial Court of the Supreme Court of Victoria including contract, trusts and equity, Corporations Law, technology, and construction.  His Honour also hears proceedings listed in the Common Law division of the Supreme Court when time allows. As a result, the successful applicant will have the opportunity to gain invaluable experience and to closely observe the work of judge and advocate.

You should have a very strong academic and research skills with an interest in commercial law. You will require excellent time management and organisational skills.  You should have an ability to write clearly and concisely. The Commercial Court is a judge-managed list so you will also require an ability to liaise in an efficient and cordial manner with members of the legal profession and the public. At least one year's post admission experience at a law firm (or similar) is desirable. 

Duties include:

  • Undertaking high level legal research;
  • Assisting with the production of judgments, papers and presentations including proof-reading and editing;
  • Performing administrative tasks, including managing the demands of the Judge Managed Lists;
  • Acting as chambers' first point of contact, liaising with Court staff, the public, the media and the profession; and
  • Undertaking the duties of an Associate in Court.
