Position Details

  • Provide the highest level legal support to the Judges of the Criminal Division of the Supreme Court on a wide range of criminal matter;
  • Legal focus – VPS Grade 4 – Melbourne CBD Location;
  • Victoria's highest court is seeking a lawyer with significant legal experience to start as soon as possible.

About us:

  • The Criminal Division is exclusively responsible for trying the most serious criminal cases, such as murder, manslaughter, attempted murder and treason.  The Division also hears other very serious criminal matters, including terrorism, major fraud and drug offences as well as appeals against conviction and sentence imposed by the Chief Magistrate and the President of the Children's Court.  Additionally, the Division hears applications and reviews under various legislation, including, but not limited to, the Bail Act 1977, the Crimes (Mental Impairment and Unfitness to be Tried) Act 1997, and the Serious Offenders Act 2018.

About the role:  

  • Provide the highest level of legal support to the Judges of the Criminal Division on criminal and quasi-civil applications;
  • Draft memoranda, chronology, rulings, judgments, speeches and Practice Notes which demonstrate a high level of legal knowledge and legal analytical skills;
  • Conduct in-depth legal research and communicate written and oral advice on a broad range of legal issues to the Judges;
  • Identify and respond to law reform opportunities and assist the Senior Legal Registrar in the process of policy development and implementing new practice and procedure relevant to the Criminal Division;
  • Provide expert guidance and authoritative advice to key stakeholders;
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to Junior Division Lawyers, policy officers and associates.

About you:

  • Tertiary qualifications in law.  Post admission experience in either civil or criminal litigation is preferred;
  • Strong research and written communication skills;
  • Organised, driven and enjoy working in a fast-paced team environment;
  • Ability to self-manage and work collaboratively with others;
  • Ability to build lasting relationship with both internal and external stakeholders.
