Position Details
The Supreme Court of Victoria is the highest court in Victoria and comprises the Court of Appeal and the Trial Division. The Court deals with major criminal and civil matters, plus appeals against decisions of lower courts.
The Supreme Court of Victoria recognises that its people are integral to its ability to meet and exceed community expectations and to achieve its goal of being an outstanding superior court. We continually strive to create a high-performance workplace that is characterized by creativity, innovation, flexibility, and quality delivery.
The Honourable Justice Delany is the Principal Judge of the Commercial Court within the Supreme Court of Victoria. His Honour is seeking two legally qualified persons to be his Associates from August 2025. The first role will commence in August, and the second in October.
Justice Delany undertakes a wide variety of general commercial and corporations matters across all lists including the General Commercial List, the Corporations List, the Group Proceedings List and the Technology, Engineering and Construction List. These include contract, equity and trusts, insolvency, oppression proceedings, directors' duties, and shareholder disputes, amongst others.
The successful applicant will have the opportunity to gain invaluable experience in the Commercial Court and to closely observe the work of judge and advocate.
You should have a very strong academic record and research skills with a keen interest in commercial law and enjoy working as part of a small team. You should have an ability to write clearly and concisely.
The Commercial Court has judge-managed lists so you will also require excellent time management and organisational skills. Importantly, you will be able to liaise in an efficient and cordial manner with members of the legal profession and the public. At least one year's post admission experience at a law firm (or similar) is desirable.
Duties include:
- Undertaking substantive legal research.
- Assisting with analysis and the production of reasons for judgment, papers and presentations, including proof-reading and editing.
- Drafting Court orders.
- Performing administrative tasks, including managing the demands of the judge-managed lists.
- Acting as chambers' first point of contact, liaising with Court staff, the public, the media, and the profession.
- Undertaking the duties of an Associate in Court - in person and occasionally by Zoom. These include: communicating with practitioners; opening and closing the court; swearing in and affirming witnesses and interpreters; recording and maintaining a repository of documents and exhibits; and transcript related tasks.
The closing date for applications is midnight Sunday 30 March 2025. Interviews for shortlisted candidates will be held in early to mid April.
