Position Details

Justice Chris Maxwell, President of the Court of Appeal, is seeking to fill two associate positions.  The first position will commence 24 September 2018. The second will commence either at the end of 2018 or beginning of 2019 – this date is negotiable. Both positions will be for a term of 18 months (subject to review after 12 months).

The successful applicants will have strong academic credentials and, preferably, at least two years' post-admission experience.

The President sits on criminal and civil appeals, and has responsibility for ensuring the efficient conduct of the work of the Court of Appeal. The President's associates assist in the discharge of his Honour's judicial and administrative responsibilities.

A significant portion of the work involves high-level legal research and writing. The President's associates also perform administrative tasks in connection with case management. 

Duties include:

  • Preparing research memoranda and assisting in the production of judgments, including proof-reading and editing;
  • Leadership and training for other Court of Appeal associates;
  • Initiate, develop and implement improvements to Court policies and processes;
  • Clerking in court;
  • Performing administrative tasks, including maintaining Court records and preparing material for use by the judge in Court;
  • Liaising with Court staff, the public, government and the profession.
