Position Details

The Court of Appeal is seeking an experienced lawyer to work closely with its Judges in the preparation of civil matters for hearing.

The Supreme Court of Victoria is the highest court in Victoria and comprises the Court of Appeal and the Trial Division. The Court of Appeal determines criminal and civil applications/ appeals against decisions of lower courts.

A Court of Appeal Lawyer directly supports the Judges of the Court of Appeal in the preparation and management of civil cases to resolution. They are responsible for ensuring that matters in the civil jurisdiction at the Supreme Court are dealt with in the most efficient way possible. They are also the central contact point for parties and other stakeholders in each matter.

A Court of Appeal Lawyer works closely with the Judges of Appeal to make sure each Judge is equipped with all the relevant information to make a decision. This may include preparing a summary of facts and issues arising in an appeal; using sound reasoning skills to make recommendations; and undertaking legal research in evolving areas of law that create precedent in Victoria.

To be successful in the role you should be able to demonstrate high level written communication, attention to detail, interpersonal and organisation/ planning skills. You must have tertiary qualifications in law and be admitted to practice. Post admission experience in civil litigation in a court and/or tribunal environment (in particular corporations law, commercial litigation, insolvency or administrative law) is highly desirable.
