Position Details

Associate to the Honourable Justice McDonald, Supreme Court of Victoria

  • Full time, fixed term role
  • $66,669 per annum + 9.5% superannuation (VPS Grade 3 position)
  • Role based in the Melbourne CBD

The Honourable Justice McDonald is seeking a legally qualified individual to be his associate, commencing in February 2019. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to gain valuable experience in a multifaceted, dynamic role, acting in an administrative capacity as the main channel of communication from chambers, as well as providing legal assistance and research support to his Honour. 

The position will be for a period of 12 months, with the possibility for extension.

Excellent interpersonal skills, including an ability to confidently and accurately convey information over the telephone, in person, and via written communication to members of the legal profession, the public and the media are essential to this role. 

At least two years post‑admission experience in the litigation department of a law firm (or similar) is desirable, along with excellent proofreading skills, proficiency in grammar and an excellent academic record is essential.  Experience on the editorial committee of a university law journal as well as proficiency in legal research is preferred.

Duties include:

  • preparing research memoranda and assisting in the production of judgments, including proofreading and editing;
  • clerking in court;
  • performing administrative tasks, including maintaining Court records and preparing material for use by the judge in Court,
  • liaising with Court staff, the public and the profession; and
  • accompanying the Judge to circuit courts in regional Victoria.
