The Role:

This position is responsible for providing expertise in handling 24/7 media issues and calls and issuing information to the media, organising media events, developing media strategies and managing media monitoring. 

Proactively mentor and support unit networks, duty officers, volunteers and staff in the delivery of media guidance, information and training.

A current Working with Children Check is an essential requirement of the role.

Your accountabilities will include but are not limited to:

  • First point of contact for media inquiries, writing media releases and analysing media results
  • Support the Manager Media and Communications to formulate official public comment as a VICSES spokesperson
  • Identify and deliver upon proactive opportunities to generate positive publicity for VICSES in the form of writing and pitching news stories and feature articles
  • Coordination of Minister events and press conferences
  • Provision of expert advice and support to Manager Media and Communications in developing media strategies
  • Identify and conduct analysis to report on media relations activities, including coordination of a monthly media and analytics report
  • Provision of media training toward volunteers and staff and coordination of regular forums for media liaison, state and regional duty officers
  • Facilitate State Media Duty Officer (SMDO) training requirements and manage all relevant PPCE for duty officer position
  • Participates in the SMDO roster, which requires to be on standby for a seven day rotating period
  • Assist with the provision of emergency information to the community during periods of declared operations, including undertaking media and social media functional roles at the State Control Centre

You will have:

  • Specialist knowledge and experience in managing media relations and communications – government experience preferred
  • An awareness of the emergency management arrangements of Victoria
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including effective networking and presentation skills
  • Strong organisational skills including the ability to project manage and prioritise tasks
  • Demonstrated mentoring and coaching skills
  • Qualifications in Journalism or Communications; or equivalent relevant experience preferred
