About the Opportunity
The Lead Designer plays a pivotal role in shaping and guiding the visual presentation of State Library Victoria. The role is part of the newly-formed Creative Studio within the Digital directorate and is responsible for designing engaging new digital projects, leading a small team of designers, collaborating with stakeholders, and strengthening and maintaining the Library's visual identity.
Reporting to the Head of Creative Studio, the Lead Designer will also engage operationally (i.e. ‘be on the tools') to design a diverse range of flagship digital projects. These could include exciting new experiences online, in-gallery, using game engines or employing immersive VR/AR technologies.
The Lead Designer is accountable for delivering high-quality design work that is both conceptually grounded and expertly realised. This involves overseeing and directing the work of other designers (both within the Design Team and external design studios) and fostering a positive and energetic design culture to drive innovative design solutions.
About You
The ideal candidate will be able to provide creative and technical guidance to foster innovative thinking and collaboration, as well as being highly proficient in design development, production and software (such as Figma, Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop). You will also be able to articulate your approach to achieve outcomes and demonstrate an aptitude for problem-solving and prototyping purposeful design solutions.
In addition, you will come to us with:
- Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline, e.g. Bachelor of Design, or equivalent production experience
- Extensive experience leading challenging creative projects, including hands-on design of high-quality digital projects
- Demonstrated experience developing comprehensive design systems for digital products
- Experience collaborating with stakeholders and communicating appropriately in response to organisational requirements.
- Proven capability in leading a multidisciplinary design team to create exceptional user experiences.
- Experience successfully leading a team, including fostering a supportive environment conducive to the delivery of successful outcomes, providing guidance to increase the engagement of team members and encouraging the growth of capability.
