Position Details

This is an exciting opportunity for a passionate and strategic leader to join us as Legal Counsel and work on some significant supreme court matters.

In the role of Legal Counsel you will deliver effective coordination and management of critical legal advice to support the VBA's enforcement function. Leading a team of legal professionals, this role is responsible for discharging the VBA's legislative powers and appearing on behalf of the VBA and related Boards before Federal and Victorian courts of all levels, the AAT, VCAT, coronial inquests, tribunals and other forums required.  

You will support the Assistant General Counsel on operational strategy and drive continuous improvement.

As our ideal candidate you will have strong leadership skills, extensive legal experience, strong negotiation and interpersonal skills with the ability to deal with difficult stakeholders and navigate ambiguity in a fast-paced and changing environment.

Who we are looking for

  • Extensive experience as a lawyer advising on, and conducting, high profile and complex  disciplinary inquiries, challenges against decisions and litigation.
  • Knowledge of the Building Act 1993 (Vic), administrative law and statutory interpretation
  • Strong leadership experience with the ability to coach, mentor and build team capability
  • Well-developed verbal, written and interpersonal skills with the ability to prepare clear and concise information and tailor your advice to your audience
  • Exceptional analytical, conceptual and problem skills with the ability to manage risks and find creative solutions
  • Exceptional stakeholder engagement with the ability to build effective relationships, negotiate and deal with difficult stakeholders and speak with conviction
