About the Role 
As Financial Controller, you'll take a lead role in managing the VEC's finance function. Reporting to the Director, Finance, you'll oversee strategic budget planning, financial performance analysis, and compliance activities. You'll manage the financial transaction & accounting functions and financial systems, while providing trusted advice to senior stakeholders. This role also involves leading a small team and working collaboratively across the organisation to strengthen financial governance and deliver operational excellence.

Key Accountabilities Include:  

  • Provide strong leadership to the finance team, fostering collaboration and clear communication. 
  • Oversee development of annual and forward budgets, including quarterly and mid-year reviews. 
  • Manage all financial operations including banking, payroll, accounts payable/receivable, taxation, fixed assets, and compliance. 
  • Deliver accurate monthly financial reporting and analysis for internal stakeholders and government departments. 
  • Lead annual audit processes and prepare statutory financial statements in line with legislative requirements. 
  • Optimise financial systems and processes, ensuring robust internal controls and data integrity. 
  • Conduct complex financial analysis and provide strategic advice to the Executive Leadership Team. 

What we're looking for 

  • Proven expertise in finance, accounting, and financial systems, ideally within the public sector. 
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and influencing skills, with the ability to build effective relationships and negotiate outcomes. 
  • Demonstrated experience in business partnering, financial modelling, budgeting, and forecasting. 
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, combined with strong written and verbal communication. 
  • Professional qualification as CPA, IPA or CA, with extensive experience as a Financial Controller in a medium or large organisation. 
  • Desirable: Knowledge of Victorian Government financial reporting requirements and experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365.
