About the branch
The Litigation and Dispute Resolution Branch provide specialist legal services to a large number of government clients and departments. The Branch enjoys an extraordinary diversity of exciting and challenging litigation, working on matters which are topical and often involve public interest issues.

Matters cover areas such as general civil claims, tortious claims and personal injury claims by prisoners, police civil claims, negligence, State care and personal injury matters, commercial law, defamation, injunctions, contempt of court, judicial review (Order 56 of the Supreme Court Rules), vexatious litigant applications, statutory interpretation, inquests, Crimes (Mental Impairment & Unfitness to be Tried) Act matters, supervision order matters, subpoenas, warrants of seizure and sale.

Reporting to the Managing Principal Solicitor, we are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Principal Solicitor to join the Litigation and Dispute Resolution Branch on a 18 month fixed-term parental leave cover. In this role you will:

  • Independently prepare, manage and conduct a broad range of complex and sensitive litigation matters in State courts and tribunals;
  • Provide expert and authoritative legal advice, both written and oral, to clients on a variety of issues either during litigation or in a pure advisory (non-litigation) context, on complex and sensitive matters; and
  • Provide support to other streams of work undertaken by the Litigation and Dispute Resolution Branch as needs arise.

Skills and experience

  • The ability to independently review, manage and conduct complex and sensitive proceedings in state courts and tribunals, including a sound knowledge of relevant court practice and procedures.
  • Experience handling general civil claims, tortious claims and personal injury claims would be advantageous and highly regarded.
  • Significant experience in providing highly specialised expert and authoritative oral and/or written advice and a clear understanding of the implications and effects of decisions made on the basis of that advice.
  • Demonstrated ability to work on a number of complex files simultaneously.
  • Proven experience in supervising, leading and mentoring staff.
