Our place within government ensures we are at the centre of legal change, reform and problem-solving. We operate as a service-driven legal professional practice and strive for excellence in this competitive environment. About the branch
The Public Law and Planning branch operates in the epicentre of public law practice in Victoria. The branch consists of three legal teams;
- The Human Rights team, whose practice focuses on human rights under Victoria's Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities Act 2006
- The Land Acquisition, Planning and Environment team whose practice spans advice and litigation on subject areas like planning and built heritage and land acquisition and compensation.
- The Constitution and Advice team, also with both advice work and litigation, on work such as Federal and State constitutional law and Treaty, and judicial review proceedings.
About the role
An exciting opportunity exists for an enthusiastic Legal Assistant to join our branch as part of the legal support team that provides efficient and effective administrative support to a team of solicitors within the branch.
The team of solicitors work across varied areas of law and in this role you will play a key role in assisting them in preparing matters for hearings and to run their practices. No two days will be the same and you will enjoy a diverse workload, where you'll have the opportunity to contribute in a collaborative, fast passed and engaging professional team.
Key responsibilities include the preparation of correspondence and court documents; amending and formatting of those documents as well as file management of all legal files in electronic format and managing hard copy documents. You'll also be responsible looking for ways to reduce the administrative workload of your solicitors such as diary and email management, monthly billing and conducting research using online databases and systems when required.
About the successful applicant
The ideal candidate will preferably have previous legal support experience in a litigation environment, however, we are keen to hear from candidates with demonstrated experience in performing a range of high level administrative support duties in a professional services environment.
You will bring with you to this role:
- Previous administrative experience in a professional services environment
- Ability to prioritise and effectively manage time to meet competing priorities
- Confident in providing high level administrative assistance to multiple operators in a busy environment
- Be a self-starter who takes initiative and has the ability to operate autonomously
- High attention to detail with a commitment to service excellence
In return, you will be provided with the opportunity to build a long-term career with ongoing learning and development opportunities.
Benefits
VGSO offers an inclusive, collegiate, and collaborative work environment where you will be well-supported and mentored to develop your knowledge. You will also be given excellent career opportunities to progress and develop within the organisation.
VGSO embraces flexibility and recognises the importance of work-life balance. We offer a flexible hybrid work arrangement, allowing employees to spend half of their time working remotely and the other half in the office. This setup encourages collaboration and strengthens team connections, while supporting your ability to achieve a healthy work-life balance.
