Position Details

The purpose of the Manager Operations, People & Culture is to deliver the hands-on function that underpins the strategic engagement and management of people at the Victorian Institute of Teaching. 

The role is largely responsible for the execution of the People & Culture activities at the operational level, as well as providing business-focused, strategic and operational HR advice. The overall aim is to ensure that all people related services match strategic initiatives and align with business objectives. 

The Manager, People & Culture will be required to: 

  • Act as the first point of contact for all people matters, providing professional, business focused HR support.
  • Provide guidance and input on business unit structures, workforce planning and succession planning.
  • Facilitate effective workforce planning and talent management to identify the capacity and capability required for the organisation to deliver its objectives; participate in the recruitment activities for key positions and talent.
  • Build strong working relationships based on credibility and open communication.
  • Provide information and coaching to empower managers in effective, consistent people management, enabling managers to assume increasing responsibility for all aspects of people management.
  • Manage and resolve employee relations issues, including grievances and complaints, conducting effective, thorough and objective investigations and identifying appropriate escalations.

 To be considered for this role you will require:

  •  Excellent knowledge of contemporary human resources, employee/industrial relations and organisational development (OD) practices, issues and trends and comprehensive understanding of employment related legislation.
  • Conceptual and analytical skills and judgement, including the ability to interpret and apply legislation, policy and guidelines and the ability to translate corporate direction into strategic plans and management systems.
  • Experience at a high level working with managers, staff and stakeholders to resolve high priority, and often sensitive and complex matters.
  • Demonstrated experience in delivering relevant and timely strategic advice to an executive team.
  • Knowledge, and demonstrated understanding, of industry-standard people management methodologies and approaches and their use in driving and embedding a high performing culture.
  • Demonstrated experience in strategic and operational HR roles.
  • Sound knowledge of the public-sector environment and government employment and IR policies is highly desirable.
  • Experience advising and supporting senior leaders on strategic and operational HR/OD matters, significant change management processes by providing strategic and operational advice
