About the role
Victoria Legal Aid (VLA) is excited to announce a new leadership role within our Equality Law Program (ELP). We are seeking an experienced lawyer to help lead and grow our work in sexual harassment and discrimination law.

In this role, you will lead the team in handling complex legal cases and strategic litigation related to sexual harassment and discrimination. You will mentor and support other lawyers, helping them develop their skills in these areas of law. Additionally, you will work closely with the leadership team to expand VLA's services and play a key role in law reform and policy change.

This role is ideal for someone with strong litigation experience, whether from a corporate law firm, within government, the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission (VEOHRC), Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC), or as a barrister.

This role is based at our Melbourne CBD office on Wurundjeri Country.

About you
As our ideal candidate, you will possess:

  • Strong background in handling complex litigation, particularly in sexual harassment and discrimination law.
  • Ability to lead a team, providing guidance, mentoring, and supervision to support the professional growth of other lawyers.
  • A deep understanding of discrimination laws, especially those related to sexual harassment, and experience navigating tribunals and court procedures in these areas.
  • A track record of developing and executing legal strategies in complex cases and the ability to think strategically about advancing issues related to equality, discrimination, and human rights.
  • A current Australian practising certificate which entitles you to practise in Victoria as a government legal practitioner (mandatory).

Don't meet every requirement? At VLA, we understand that your work and life experiences can be just as valuable. If you're excited about this role but your CV doesn't align perfectly with our job description, we encourage you to apply anyway. You may be just the right candidate for this or one of our many other opportunities.
