Forensic Technician (Casework Assistant)

The Victoria Police Forensic Services Department is an accredited laboratory that provides forensic services to the Victoria Police, persons involved in the administration of justice and the public. The Botany Unit attends scenes, examines plant material and provides scientific expertise, education and research into botanically related fields in support of the Victoria Police and the judicial system. The function of the Chemical Drug Intel Unit is to conduct routine testing of non-evidential drugs seized by Victoria Police for the purposes of better informing Victoria Police and other interested stakeholders about drug trends across the State.

Botany/ Chemical Drug Intelligence Units

  • 1 x Forensic Officer Level 2 ongoing position available
  • Commencing Salary will be $65,380
  • FO-2 salary range $ 65,380 - $ 72,181 p.a. + 9.5% super + leave loading

*Your usual place of work will be within the Botany Unit or Chemical Drug Intelligence Unit, Forensic Services Department, however you may be required to work at any other division within the Department as required

The core duties are as follows.

  • Under direction and supervision assist with the examination of casework using defined methods and procedures.
  • Attend and assist at secondary locations under direction and supervision to recover exhibits and samples where required.
  • Present factual evidence in Courts of Law where required.
  • Conduct quality controls within work area, including keeping records where necessary.
  • Operate and maintain existing systems and processes including technical and scientific equipment.
  • Assist in prioritising tasks in order to achieve specified targets.
  • Solve routine problems using readily available information.
  • Regularly interact with a range of internal and external stakeholders to provide information.
  • Provide general administrative assistance, respond to customer enquiries, maintain records and compile reports.
  • As part of a team assist in relevant research and development projects to improve and expand Unit methodology and capability

Skills & experience:

  • Ability to work under direction and supervision to undertake scientific/technical examinations following established procedures.
  • Ability to conduct technical laboratory duties under direction and supervision and experience in the maintenance of instrumentation.
  • Good administrative skills including the maintenance of detailed and accurate records.
  • Good oral and written communication skills to prepare reports and provide results to internal and external stakeholders, on technical matters.
  • Ability to work autonomously and/or in a team environment and to manage workloads in order to meet defined/agreed targets and deadlines.
  • An understanding of the customer service requirements of the position and a demonstrated record of strong commitment and achievement in meeting customer needs.
  • A proven record of ethical behaviour and a demonstrated commitment to the Victoria Police Code of Ethics and Conduct, Financial Code of Practice, and the Organisational Values.

Requirements and relevant information:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification would be desirable.
  • The position will require the incumbent to assist with the maintenance of the Botany Unit narcotic plant reference garden.
  • The incumbent must possess a Victorian Drivers Licence and the ability to obtain a Victoria Police Approved Driving Authority.
  • A security clearance must be obtained which will include fingerprinting.
  • The successful candidate will be required to provide a DNA sample (buccal swab) for use in laboratory quality control procedures (elimination purposes only).
  • The position may require the incumbent to work outside the normal daily hours and attend crime scenes.

Citizen Requirements:

A person is not eligible to be appointed to a public service position within Victoria Police unless they are one of the following:

  • An Australian citizen;
  • An Australian permanent resident;
  • A New Zealand citizen who has entered Australia on a valid passport and has unrestricted rights to employment; or
  • Non-citizens holding a valid visa with work rights.
