Position Details

  • 2x full time ongoing positions (part time applications considered)
  • Salary range: $87,799 - $98,901 (pro rata) plus super plus salary packaging
  • Up to $15,900 in salary packaging and hybrid WFH & office model

About the role
As a lawyer at Victoria Legal Aid (VLA), you will provide high-quality legal services in one or more of criminal law, family violence and child protection. You will represent clients in various courts, offering casework and legal advice through multiple channels. Additionally, you will engage in community legal education, participate in law reform initiatives, and stay updated with legal developments. You will also contribute to improving client services and supporting office strategies.

This role is based at our Ballarat office on Wadawurrung and Dja Dja Wurrung Country.

About you
As our ideal candidate, you will possess:

  • Demonstrated ability to act as an advocate, providing effective legal advice, casework, and negotiation services.
  • Strong knowledge or practical experience in legal aid practice areas including criminal law, family violence and child protection.
  • High level of communication skills with the proven ability to liaise effectively with clients, staff, and external stakeholders.
  • Experience working collaboratively within a team and fostering a supportive work environment.
  • Demonstrated experience working with First Nations Australians, including an understanding of cultural norms, communication styles, and complex issues faced by Australian First Nations peoples.
  • A current Australian practising certificate which entitles you to practise in Victoria as a government legal practitioner (mandatory).
