The Department of Justice and Community Safety is seeking a Strategic Advisor to the Commissioner to provide a critical role within Corrections Victoria.
About the Business Unit
Corrections Victoria is part of the Corrections and Justice Services (CJS) group in the Department of Justice and Community Safety and supports the Minister for Corrections. CJS also comprises Justice Health (which manages health services in adult and youth custodial facilities); Policy, Strategy and Service Design; Group Services and Coordination; and Justice Services (which includes Community Correctional Services and other justice programs).
Corrections Victoria operates Victoria's adult custodial system, seeking to provide safe and secure containment for people in custody and an environment and programs and services that support rehabilitation. Corrections Victoria runs 13 public custodial facilities, one transition centre, and oversees privately operated facilities. Corrections Victoria's vision is for Safer Prisons, Safer People and Safer Communities.
About the Role
The Strategic Advisor is responsible for the provision of high-level advice to the Commissioner, particularly within a social, political and legal context. While maintaining an up-to-date knowledge of current internal and external issues and risks, the Strategic Advisor is responsible for making recommendations and determining solutions that provide options for decision making for the Commissioner.
The Strategic Advisor provides the organisational leadership that supports the Commissioner and promotes Corrections Victoria's strategy and values. Working within a complex and exciting environment, the role requires flexibility, ability to balance competing priorities, capacity to exercise sound judgement, undertake effective and timely actions, and coordinate a range of strategic projects and advice. It requires excellent stakeholder management skills and the ability to perform under pressure.
The role requires someone with proven experience in producing clear, concise and well-structured written documents.
As the Strategic Advisor to the Commissioner, some of your duties will include:
- Providing high-level authoritative advice to the Commissioner on complex and sensitive matters.
- Developing responsive briefing reports, high quality presentations at short notice and undertake projects as required in respect to highly complex, sensitive and confidential issues, including making recommendations and determining solutions that provide options for decision making by the Commissioner.
- Contributing to the strategic planning process for the Commissioner's Office and contribute effectively to ensure that the Office delivers its targets within budget, implements its strategies and operates within the corporate policy framework.

About you
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- Proven experience in producing clear, concise and well-structured written documents, tailored to diverse audiences.
- Strong conceptual and analytical skills, with the ability to interpret complex information, identify key issues, and develop clear, evidence-based insights and recommendations.
- Demonstrated knowledge of public sector operations, including policy development, cabinet processes, ministerial briefings, and inter-agency collaboration.
- Proven ability to perform effectively under pressure in a dynamic, unstructured environment
Qualifications
- A tertiary qualification in public policy, political science, economics, or a related discipline would be highly regarded.
