Position Details
About the role:
The Director leads the Safety Insights Unit within the Safety branch at Safer Care Victoria (SCV).
This unit exists to understand and strengthen system performance across the Victorian health system by identifying emerging risks, collaborating and communicating with safety leaders, and disseminating learnings as an outcome from adverse events. It plays a critical role in ensuring that system performance data is translated into actionable, evidence-informed improvements that drive sustainable change at a system level.
The unit brings together safety incident, data analysis, and system intelligence to provide a comprehensive picture of safety performance. It monitors emerging trends and risks, and works closely with partners across the sector to ensure insights are translated into practical improvements that enhance the reliability, quality, and responsiveness of care.
The Director is responsible for ensuring that SCV leads high-quality, learning-oriented analysis of sentinel event reviews, grounded in systems thinking, human factors, and a commitment to prevention. The Director ensures that safety intelligence is used to identify patterns and signals across cohorts, services, and settings, enabling early detection of emerging risks and a timely, coordinated response.
About us:
Safer Care Victoria was established in January 2017 to ensure our health services are providing safe, high-quality care to patients: every time, everywhere. About you:
- Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline such as medicine, nursing, allied health, public health, health services management, human factors, patient safety, epidemiology, or data science.
- Demonstrated extensive experience in a senior leadership role within the health system, with a strong focus on safety, quality, risk management, or health system improvement.
- Proven capability to lead multidisciplinary teams and drive strategic safety initiatives in complex environments.
- Significant understanding of incident review methodologies (e.g. root cause analysis, systems-based investigation), human factors, and risk mitigation frameworks.
- Demonstrated understanding of safety and quality improvement developed through significant experience in health system or government.
What we offer:
- The opportunity to perform meaningful work, making direct contributions toward enabling Victorians to be the healthiest people in the world.
- A wide range of growth and development opportunities within the department and wider Victorian Public Service & Sector.
