About the Department
The role of the Department of Education is to support Victorians to build prosperous, socially engaged, happy and healthy lives. It does this by supporting lifelong learning and healthy development, strengthening families and helping to equip people with the skills and knowledge for a 21st century economy and society.
About the Branch
The Information Management Branch oversees how data is collected, organised, distributed, and utilised across schools, early childhood education, corporate offices, and the Department. Focus areas include the Data Governance Council and custodianship model, ensuring accountability and stewardship of data; advanced analytics; Business Intelligence (BI); Artificial Intelligence (AI), including Generative AI (Gen AI); Master Data Management (MDM) for data integrity; and the use of data warehousing for effective data organisation. By collaborating with stakeholders, initiatives are aligned with departmental goals, fostering data-driven decision-making to improve educational and wellbeing outcomes for children and students.
About the Role
This role is responsible for leading the department's AI program of work which includes the implementation of an enterprise AI strategy, establishing and managing an AI advisory service, overseeing AI proof of concept and pilot projects, and providing expert advice to stakeholders on the use of AI technologies.
This role works closely with the Information Management Leadership Team to support the department in using data and AI solutions, including Gen AI to make evidence-informed decisions and improve operational processes. It also contributes to the development of ethical policies, governance frameworks, and training programs to ensure the responsible use of AI.
About you
To be successful in this role you will have:
- Demonstrated experience leading complex AI, analytics and data governance projects in a large government organisation, coupled with advanced understanding of AI technologies, including Gen AI, and their application in the public sector.
- A strong grasp of data ethics and responsible AI principles, the ability to develop and implement comprehensive AI or data governance frameworks, policies, procedures, and data quality improvement initiatives aligned with relevant legislation and standards, including the development and use of data quality metrics.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, demand and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex technical information to a diverse range of stakeholders.
- Experience with how AI and data analytics can be applied in an education setting to improve operations and/or productivity.
Desirable Qualifications and Experience
As our ideal candidate, you will have:
- Tertiary qualifications in a relevant field (e.g., Information Technology, data governance, computer science, information technology, data science) are highly desirable.
- Equivalent experience will also be considered.
- Experience in public sector or regulated environments is highly desirable
