The Department of Treasury and Finance provides economic, financial and resource management advice to help the Victorian Government deliver its policies. We strive for excellence in financial and economic management to improve the lives of all Victorians.
Division
The Economic Division provides advice to Government to improve Victoria's productivity, resource allocation, competitiveness, and equity. The Economic Division is comprised of four core groups which provide analysis and advice to Government across a breadth of priority issues.
About the role
The manager position leads a team of policy staff to support policy design and implementation. The role involves a diverse range of work, including overseeing the development and implementation of policy and preparation of advice to senior department executives and the Treasurer on complex commercial, economic and policy matters.
The role will provide the successful candidate with the opportunity to contribute to the delivery of the Early Intervention Investment Framework, which is guiding investments to where timely assistance for Victorians will improve life outcomes for individuals and reduce pressure on acute services.
Key accountabilities
- Provide high quality advice and lead research to Government on policy and complex issues relating to social policy reform, including formulation of practical policy options
- Build and maintain effective relationships within the Department of Treasury and Finance and with other departments and portfolio agencies and thought leaders
- Develop a proactive work agenda that supports high quality advice and policy leadership in these policy areas
- Lead improvements in the provision of high-level analysis and advice to Government and senior management on a variety of issues and reform initiatives
- Coach and manage staff to be effective leaders, and collaborate with other managers to manage the team's staff and deliverables and implement strategies to build team capability and contribute to team culture.
Experience and qualifications
- A strong record of achievement leading qualitative and quantitative policy advice in economic, public finance or commercial contexts
- Highly developed communication, influencing and negotiating skills including the ability to build consensus and foster effective working relationships with key stakeholders at senior levels within the public sector
- Ability to manage a proactive work agenda, showing policy leadership and influencing policy outcomes across government
- Ability to provide practical advice to government to solve problems in a sensitive, time pressured and complex environment with competing and changing priorities
- Well-developed leadership skills with the proven ability to collaborate with senior managers, build a positive team culture, align teams with organisational values and goals, and provide effective people management.
Mandatory requirements
Degree qualified in a relevant discipline or field.
