About the role
In this role, you will:
- Deliver high quality legal services in criminal law, family violence (including pre-court advice through Help Before Court and Pre-Court engagement) and if suitably qualified, youth crime
- Supervise and mentor junior lawyers and build capability across the team
- Appear in complex matters in the Magistrates Court and Children's Court (if qualified)
- Engage in stakeholder relationships, reform initiatives and community legal education
The Broadmeadows team provides legal services across criminal law, youth crime, family violence, family law, child protection and civil law. A large team of Independent Mental Health Advocates are also based in the region. Legal services are provided across two Magistrates' Courts (Broadmeadows and Seymour), the Specialist Children's Court (Broadmeadows), the Mental Health Tribunal, the AAT, VCAT and the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia. Broadmeadows is located in the City of Hume which is home to a diverse population. The city has a rich cultural heritage, with many residents from different ethnic backgrounds.
This role is based at our Broadmeadows office on Wurundjeri Country.
About you
As our ideal candidate, you will possess:
- Experience in complex criminal law, and ideally family violence intervention order and youth crime matters, including casework and advocacy in local courts and tribunals.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with clients who are socially and economically disadvantaged, as well as with colleagues and external stakeholders.
- Strong ability to supervise, mentor, and train junior staff, helping them develop their skills in criminal law and family violence matters.
- The ability to work collaboratively and foster a supportive team environment.
- A current Australian practising certificate which entitles you to practise in Victoria as a government legal practitioner (mandatory).
